I hate this kind of thing. This comes from this month’s issue of Self, a magazine whose marketing angle is one of inspirational happiness and confidence. Better advice would be:
-Examine why others’ success inspires hatred and jealousy in yourself.
-Stop viewing weight loss as a competition with other women.
-Exercise and eat for health and wellness.
-Find other ways to value your own worth besides weight.
…But hey, I’m not a mainstream women’s magazine writer.
These messages that pit women against each other are really everywhere — we perpetuate them ourselves. (The author of this article is female.) I stopped renewing all my magazine subscriptions, but they still come anyways. (That’s a common phenomenon — sometimes they send them anyways to boost circulation numbers, especially if you’re in an advertiser-coveted zip code). I would give them to a hospital or something except I don’t want to pass along the shitty feelings, so into the recycling bin they’ll go.
